The nice PR move of the day goes to the Ne.Jersey Nets, as pointed out today in Media Post unver the headline “AS Strike Darkens Broadway, Nets View Ticket Swap”…the Nets are using the stage hands strike to move unused tickets for this weekend…great move to get PR and fill some seats, especially for tourists…a few yeards ago during the transit strike the Knicks offered some ticket discounts for those showing a MetroCard, but this is one even better…nice move guys.
One great coup for the New York Times today, which may have gone unnoticed in the Knicks issues the past few days, was the great work Vinnie Mallozzi and Corey Kilgallon did that ended up in today's Metro Section. Atlantic Sun Conference, with Gardner Webb (the alma mater of Knicks legend Eddie Lee Wilkins), Belmont, and Mercer all posting mega-upset wins. However you have to wonder what's going through the minds of Dave Balzar, the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast College, and Eddie Payne, the mentor at USC-Upsate (the former South Carolina-Aiken)…these schools were picked to finish last in the Atlantic Sun (FGG has only been in existance since 1997) and now they have to battle each of these powerful mid majors twice each…yikes.
Great note on tonights ESPN College basketball halftime show by Steve Lavin…he showed that the three A-Sun upsets were coached by a trio who have an average length of stay at the three schools of 14 seasons…they beat three coaches at major schools (USC, Cincy and Kentucky).whose head coaches have all been there less than three years.
Lastly, Im reading Tom Callahan's great book on former Giant GM Ernie Accorsi and one of the most telling quotes thus far from the former Colts OR guy turned GM was that his key to success was “Coach and quarterback…if they don’t get along you are done.”
