PR Move of the Day:great local flavor to drive a unique promotion and collectable with some national legs…The Mississippi River Kings of the CHL are comemorating Elvis Presley's birthday tonight wit.a one-time Elvis Jersey night…the players will be wearing.specially designed (and authorized by the Presley estate) jerseys that will be auctioned off for charity after the game and then online in the weeks to come. It is a great one-off idea and a design that should bring some nice added exposure to the team in a market where hockey may not be king (pun intended).
Also on the hockey front, for those who haven’t seen the documentary Ice Kings, it is now running regularly on FSN (January 15 at noon is next, but its available on dvd). Outstanding sports documantarian Craig Shapiro captured the amazing story of Mount Saint Charles Academy in Rhode Island and the stories behind their 26 consecutive state titles, and the marathon they had to go through to get there. It is a great example of how even in today's internet crazed and YouTube filled world the hard working can find the untold story and make it compelling to the mass audience.Darren Rovell for finding another great business piece this week on the unique and unusual valuation of sponsorships in sports. Darren posted a story on the most effective minor league promotions from a company called Plan B Branding, which revealed that The Famous Chicken, at a cost of only 22 cents a fan, remains the best promotion for the buck in all of sports. Maybe the Padres can bring him back for nostalgia sake.
