PR Move of the Day: Today's move has to go to coach C. Vivian Stringer and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who despite a controversial last second loss to the University of Tennessee last night in Knoxille, scored big points by donning pink uniforms for a national television audience in support of “Think Pink” day in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The uniform change, done on national television (with the highlights running all day on multiple media outlets) showed the social responsibility of the team and the university to sacrifice brand exposure for the greater good and support a very worthwhile cause. As a side note, the Rutgers-Camden women's team is also supporting the cause. donning pink duds for their Division III matchup Wednesday against rival Richard Stockton College. Nice cross solidarity for a class program, led by one of the great college hoops coaches in the country.
Some other quick notes…Darren Rovell's special on Nike airs Tuesday night on CNBC and will be repeated numerous times over the next few weeks. The piece goes deep inside the business of the swoosh, and is a must see for all those involved in the branding business. A link to the online portion, complete with microsite, can be accessed here. Lastly, nice piece on si.com last week by Cory McCartney on the hoops tandem of Andrew Hemminger and Dave Bensch, who traveled cross country to sit down with many of the legendary coaches of college basketball for their book, Destination Basketball. The time and effort these two guys spent tracking down and getting access to many members of the Holy Grail of collegiate coaching will make it worth a read alone.
