It seems like there is no offseason for major sports, even on the collegiate level. In football, even without a 1-A playoff system, the Bowl Season is followed by the combine and workouts days followed b. spring footbal. followed by the draft followed by…maybe there is a bit of a lull as student-athletes take exams and coaches clean their offices. Then this week comes the first Heisman salvo for 2010...a video campaign launched by the University of West Virginia RB Noel Devine.
On first glance, maybe people will say its way too early. media and fans are not concentrating on college football yet and maybe this gets lost in the shuffle. However launching a campaign, the Facebook page has over 2,000 members already, now before school ends is actually very smart. It gives casual fans and diehard Mountaineer followers something to chew on as we hit this college football lull, is sets the stage for “something more” going into the summer, it shows Devine and other student-athletes that the University has a long term support and promotion plan in place and it gives students a chance to use the video virally when they are away from school for the summer. Yes there are pratfalls…Devine could get hurt. fall out of favor or just have a bad start to the season, all normal risks. Even with those normal risks, the Mountaineers gained some valuable offseason buzz and set a nice high bar for others to glean on to as the race for promotion in the digital space heats up on the collegiate level.
