Fishing Where The Fish Are; Barstool, Steph Curry and Dr. Fauci

March 27, 2020 by Joe Favorito

Every day I talk to people a little younger in various places: Atlanta, Minneapolis, Manhattan. And although none are as bold and clueless as the knuckleheads on the beach in Florida last week for spring break, many say the same thing; this Coronavirus thing is a little overblown, the numbers are being overplayed and even if I get it, I will be fine.

That’s why it makes sense to talk to people in places here they convene online, and that’s why it was a huge stroke for Dr. Anthony Fauci to take the time to talk in simple terms with the younger demo through at least two key places the last week; Barstool’s Pardon My Take and an Instagram Live segment with Steph Curry.

Whether  you like Barstool or not, you cannot argue with the influence the platform has over a male demo; one that needs to get a better feel for COVID-19 and the impact it is having, and Dr. Fauci has the ability to simplify listen and talk to…not at…people like few others. The same is true of his interaction with the Warriors star this week; it reached another demo who may or may not believe, but hearing it from one of your own age; a powerful athlete who commands your attention maybe more than a political leader or…your parents…can really help move the needle.

Now we have seen this crossover impact on generations or kith candidates like Barack Obama in the past, he had the swagger and the ability to engage with young people, and luckily in many ways Dr. Fauci also had the ability to pull off the interviews as well; he came across as informed but also cool, not dictatorial.

There are some that are saying he is doing too much media and it’s a waste of time reaching an audience not listening. Really? Whats the alternative, to have a precious demo continue to be uninformed by the white noise of politicians? If I were a team or a league I would see how I can get Dr. Fauci in front of my demo in some way as soon as possible. He is real, a good speaker and a good listener who as the ability to deliver an important message in simple terms.

He did it with Barstool and with Curry, and hopefully will do a few more times until the tide is turned. Influencers ask away, Dr. Fauci is our MVP.
