A short note to take note of on a Sunday.
We get lots of newsletters and digests daily from virtually every industry. We also do our own collection as a newsletter of topics on a wide number of reads every Sunday, so the world doesn’t really need any more newsletters right now.
Now notes columns, those are a different story. Case in point is the one our colleague Terry Lyons does every Sunday for Digital Sports Desk. It is an homage to the late sportswriter Dick Young, who would pull notes of note from anywhere and everywhere with his own POV sitting at the top. The Sunday notes columns used to be a staple, but with few exceptions…Mike Vaccaro in the New York Post, The Boston Globe on various sports, Tyler Kepner in the NY Times on baseball, Sam Farmer in the LA Times on football, they have largely disappeared. Colleague John Genzale used to do one on the sports and entertainment space for Sports Business Journal, and it was interesting and well read, but that disappeared.
It would not take much to bring the notes column for any industry, or sport, or genre back. There are literally hundreds of emails, press release and sites to pull from, and all it takes is a place to collect notes in a document as they come in and then compile for an hour or two weekly. It is not a sexy BREAKING NEWS piece…it is not a high profile opinion piece…it is a digest for those noteworthy that might fall through the cracks on a busy week…an worthy of a look. Also for those who say there aren’t games going on, hence the disappearance of some of those columns…there are lots of news and notes and social good best practices being done…so the need for notes has never been greater…
Check out Terry’s work, or Vacs Wacks. They are worth your time…maybe more to come.
