It took a while and we still haven’t seen the hard copy (or the ebook), but we are proud and happy that the third edition of “Sports Publicity” is now out and available. The updates from the the second edition which came out in 2012 are pretty vast, and we have brought a list of new industry legends into the current editions, with short bios on longtime NHL PR head Bernadette Mansur, veteran NBA communications leader Brian McIntyre, longtime college sports pro now at Auburn University Shelly Poe, and veteran NFL comms leader Joe Browne. It was a fun group to add.
Thanks to the help of Columbia grad Tom Macakay, this edition, which we put to bed in early February, has an updated look at the digital and social side, great best practices from teams and leagues, updated crisis management sections and even a section on audio storytelling and content creation. This new edition includes more international cases and data, interviews, best practices, and expanded coverage of, gaming, eSports and technological developments in communications; discussion of key contemporary issues such as multicultural media relations and ‘athletes as brands’; and an emphasis on the importance of strategic planning. We also received the usual solid input from colleague Terry Lyons and others, so we hope many find it interesting and useful.
Sadly what is missing is the world that we are in post March 12…but the learning and best practices we have seen and experienced and are still going through will be included in a new book late in 2020 or early 2021. So stay tuned for that.
