So we hit Memorial Day weekend and myself, and many others in this great business, have never been more excited about what lies ahead. However with that, maybe its becuase I’m a little grayer and certainly am more often than not one of the older people in the room, that I get asked more and more when is it time to strt slowing down at the second half of 58. It’s a ying person’s business right? What? Define young?
Hah.
To do what?
In the past month, as we get back to where we are going again, I have been lucky enough to get out and about and connect, and reconnect with some amazing folks, in person! That, and the students we get to work with, long with those around me on a constant basis, have given me the chance again to get really thrilled about the path ahead. One that is not smooth or easy, but one which can hold such great surprises if we just look and listen.
Speaking of looking and listening, I keep getting reminded about the value of getting up there a bit, but having a youthful and curious outlook combined with the ability of having perspective.
The most recent time was when we went to see the youthful and ergentic Sting in Atlantic City. One of his latest songs is called “The Bridge,” and he talked about its lyrics.
Some will seek the higher ground,
Some of us the bridge.
Do we choose to watch from afar or work to bridge the gaps over the waters that divide us.
Then there was Bon Jovi, whose lyrics from the song “Older” reminded me of the value of being comfortable with who you are as things move along, not who you are NOT.
I like the bed I’m sleeping in
It’s just like me, it’s broken in
It’s not old — just older
Like a favorite pair of torn blue jeans
This skin I’m in it’s alright with me
It’s not old — just older
So as we head around the corner again, and toward a summer which can be murky and rocky but holds great promise for listening, learning and growing, lets not get caught up in ageism or any ism…lets use the talents we have to keep moving ahead. Bridge the gaps.
What wonderful gifts we have, embrace them as they come.
