A little pause on July 4.
Happy is as happy does
Grab a six -tring, find a rope swing
Hang a palm tree in your truck
Drink a beer just because
Steal a slow dance in a rain storm
And a kiss from who you love
Laugh and live with a half-full cup
Yeah, happy is as happy does

I have been thinking a lot about legacy as we turn another page and enter what will be year 36 in and around this business, and the few miles ahead are closer than the ones behind. When you work for yourself as the “Studio Musician” in sports, media and entertainment you touch lots of people, but the wake you leave behind can kind of get lost. You build or help build, lots of things and events, but since you are part of the band the trail can be a little muddled or murky in history.
However I was reminded over the weekend of a fun legacy I had almost forgotten about…one that is probably more valuable and less tangible than most…the young people we have influenced along the way, at very early ages (and hopefully most for the good) and will have taken away something that you may have said or done for the good that will have a positive impact on them.
The reminder came in the form of a few thank you cards from the students we have taught at the high school level for several summers past. Most if not all, are now on to graduate school, careers and lives of their own, but those signed cards brought back a ton of memories from way back. It was a great reminder that ones “legacy’ may not be a company or a brand, but in the little touchpoints of the people.
Not bad to remember on a day of celebration.
Lets keep driving the bus and picking up those who want to join the ride along the way, lots of gas in the tank!
