It’s always nice to see the little things that get done in storytelling that are worth emulating.
Two from this week.
Penguins paint the ice. Simple one, especially when you have a paint company…PPG…as your arena sponsor. For the second year in a row, the Pittsburgh Penguins allowed season ticketholders onto the ice to paint messages and pictures on Sunday.
This year’s designs featured Sponge Bob, a large rubber duck, emojis, the Pitt Panthers logo and countless penguins, even including the Robo-Penguin. Messages on the ice gave love to Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and “Big Jeff Carter” who just ended his career and retired as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Like had been displayed in the past, at least one fan painted “Thanks for the Jake Shakes,” a reference to a promotion at a local retail store that sold half-price milkshakes the day after Jake Guentzel scored a goal.
Now for other clubs to take a look at…other sports might be tough…but that special something in a visual form is super cool.
The Largest demo in the country get a Mets lift.
Granted it’s a sales prom, but the Mets became the latest team this week to form a plan for those fans 55 and older. They call it ‘silver sluggers’…again why does it have to imply old, but the goal of the community is clear and smart. Find a way for older fans to share information, learn together and have a commonality amongst the team. The Mets assume this group is no longer working…it’s for four weekday day games…but there are pregame meetups, interaction with Mets legends, scoreboard mentions, trivia, special giveaways and some other perks. It is hopefully the next stage of many teams realizing that the demo has great value…and will be around fr decades.
Plus these fans already have an affinity for the team…they are already fans for life, so let’s give em their due.
Both smart and worth noting to give their fans a little more…
